GWAR brought their grotesque brand of satirical metal to the House of Blues in Anaheim Ca on Oct 19, with support from Squid Pissers and Dark Funeral, and drenched the audience in blood and shit from celebrity effigies like Donald Trump, Barack Obama, and Kamala Harris while blasting out cult favorites for an eager packed house of fans.
Starting off the night was a Squid Pisser, who describe themselves as nasty, fast and noisy glitched out hardcore for fans of all things slimy. Their strobed out, high energy performance got the fans instantly ready for a night of crazy and unpredictable metal music. The lead vocalist leaping across the pit into the crowd to let them surf him around was just the beginning of a set of performances that has to be experienced to be believed.
Dark Funeral, a Swedish Black metal group, continued the night of ritualism and performance with songs like Nosferatu, To Carve Another Wound, and Where Shadows Forever Reign, finishing off the night by waving their flag and ramping up the crowd for the final act of the grisly night.
GWAR, known for their controversial, grotesque, and over the top satirical brand of metal that incorporates politics and world events, didn't disappoint. They started off the night by bringing out comical versions of Donald Trump and Kamala Harris for the "debate" that we didn't get to see, which led to the Harris effigy spraying the audience with explosive diarrhea, and Trump being eviscerated onstage, being dragged around on stage all while spraying blood out over the audience.
GWAR, who has been on the scene since the mid-80's and has seen a complete turn over in members, were adorned in their usual costumes including front ... man? .. Blothar the Beserker, appearing as a stout, pigface, horned goblin. He wears a leather harness around his chest and stomach, with studded metal wrist armor, but probably most eye catching of all is his "udder" which is actually just four penises, named Eddie, Frankie, and the two little ones on the bottom are called Bobby and Matt. They also spray the crowd.
This was a unique experience, and the first time I have had to photograph a concert in rain gear.
