Disney’s Newsies opens July 18 at the Landis Performing Arts Center in Riverside, launching Riverside City College’s Musical Theatre Summer Conservatory with a high-octane production full of heart, grit, and Broadway-worthy spectacle. With nearly 100 cast and crew members, this massive undertaking blends young local talent with RCC Theatre students and instructors to deliver a night of theater that promises to thrill from start to finish.

Carter Friedhof leads the cast as Jack Kelly, bringing a mix of swagger and vulnerability to the rebellious leader of the newsboys. With strong vocals, confident stage presence, and emotional nuance, Friedhof is poised to anchor the show with a compelling and charismatic performance.

Bella Ramirez takes on the role of Katherine Plumber with wit, charm, and a commanding voice. She stands out in “Watch What Happens,” delivering rapid-fire lyrics with clarity and conviction while capturing the heart and drive of a young journalist determined to make a difference.

As Crutchie, Jeamil Haboud delivers one of the show’s most touching performances. His portrayal is filled with warmth and sincerity, and his solo “Letter from the Refuge” promises to be an emotional highlight that resonates with audiences.

Young up-and-comer Luca Genazzini plays Les with boundless energy and effortless charm. Despite his age, Genazzini holds his own alongside more seasoned performers, offering a standout turn that hints at a bright future on stage.

The choreography, directed by Brenda Jill Castro, is shaping up to be a true showstopper. From ensemble tap routines to high-flying lifts, the production’s dance numbers are packed with energy and precision, especially in crowd favorites like “Seize the Day” and “King of New York.”

Part of RCC’s Summer Conservatory, Newsies brings together youth from across the Inland Empire to train and perform alongside college-level artists and instructors. More than just a summer show, it’s a celebration of mentorship, opportunity, and the power of live performance.

Performances run July 18 and 19 at 7 PM, with matinees on July 19 and 20 at 2 PM at the Landis Performing Arts Center. Tickets can be reserved through RCC’s box office or online at RCC Online Box Office.
