On May 29th, underscores brought the second night of her sold-out Galleria Tour to The Observatory in Santa Ana. The tour arrives alongside the release of her newest album, U, a record that continues to push the boundaries of hyperpop while further cementing her place as one of the genre's defining artists. From viral moments and iconic pop-ups to surprise DJ sets and an ever-growing online fanbase, underscores has become one of the most influential figures in the current hyperpop scene, and the excitement surrounding the show made that impossible to ignore.
Long before the doors opened, fans lined up outside The Observatory eager to secure their spots. Many came prepared with glow sticks inspired by her beloved 2021 album Fishmonger.
Opening the night was producer and longtime collaborator umru, who delivered a DJ set that immediately got the crowd moving. The audience showed him plenty of love throughout the set, dancing and cheering from start to finish. By the time his set ended, the room was fully energized and ready for the main event.
When the lights finally dropped, the giant screen on stage went black before displaying the words "underscores," "Galleria," and "May 29th." A live camera feed then appeared, showing April, better known as underscores, backstage with a microphone in hand as she performed the opening moments of "Point A." As the camera followed her through the backstage hallways and toward the stage, she shouted the song's famous line, "so get your phones out," with the crowds growing excitement filling the room. The Fishmonger glow sticks lit up across the venue as she emerged on stage and launched into "Locals (Girls Like Us)." The energy only grew as she followed it with "Poplife," which featured a surprise appearance from umru. The giant screen even displayed a "live umru reaction" camera feed, adding another playful touch to the show's production.
The set continued with several songs from U, including "Hollywood Forever," which was met with an immediate roar from the crowd. One of the night's loudest reactions came when the opening moments of "the peace" began playing, with fans shouting every lyric back at the stage. She also treated the audience to an unreleased song, "Unlimited Love," giving fans a glimpse of what is coming next.
The entire performance felt like a carefully crafted production. Every song was paired with custom visuals displayed across the massive screen behind her, creating a unique atmosphere that changed from track to track. The choreography, camera work, and graphics all worked together to make the show feel cinematic, as if the audience was watching a live film unfold in real time.
Midway through the night, the pace slowed as a keyboard was wheeled onto the stage. underscores sat down and performed the emotional fan favorite "del mar county fair 2008." As the song filled the room, the crowd gently waved their glow sticks overhead, creating one of the most beautiful moments of the night. It was a stark contrast to the high-energy chaos that surrounded much of the set and showcased her ability to connect with fans on a more personal level.
Later in the show, she picked up an electric guitar and continued powering through the set, bringing even more energy to the stage as the night approached its finale. Eventually, she thanked the crowd and walked off stage, seemingly bringing the concert to an end.
As fans began chanting for an encore, the live camera feed on the giant screen moved through the crowd and worked its way up toward the balcony. There, the camera landed on a couple watching the show together. Moments later, one of them got down on one knee and proposed. The venue erupted into cheers as the proposal was accepted, creating a heartfelt moment that nobody in attendance was expecting.
With the crowd still coming down from the surprise, underscores returned to the stage for the encore. She performed "1-800-FUCKOFF," her collaboration with kimj, before closing the night with fan favorite "Music." As the final song rang out through the venue, it was clear that GALLERIA was more than just an album tour. It was a complete artistic experience, combining music, visuals, and community into a show that left a lasting impression on everyone in attendance.
