Have you ever wondered what would happen if a bunch of deeply flawed people spend their Monday morning dealing with a series of bad romantic decisions, piled on top of more bad romantic decisions all while desperately trying to keep their secrets straight? Well, Riverside Community Player is serving up the answer in their latest production, The Cottage, a comedy farce directed by Neffer Gallagos.

The audience is taken to the summer of 1923 in the English countryside where a weekend getaway quickly spirals into a whirlwind of misunderstandings, awkward encounters, and increasingly ridiculous complications. Sandy Rustin's play pays tribute to classic British farces, ala Fawlty Towers, while delivering plenty of laughs for the modern audience. Gallegos describes the show's characters as "thoroughly imperfect lovers" navigating a rollercoaster ride of indecision, deception, and misplaced confidence.

While the script provides the foundation for the farce, the production finds its true success in the cast's ability to execute the shows quick pace without missing a beat. Farce lives and dies on timing, and this ensemble consistently finds the right rhythm, building laughs on perfectly timed reactions and revelations.

Malauna Ly Thach anchors the production as Sylvia, providing the emotional center of the chaos. While everyone else scrambles to keep up with the latest disaster, Ly Thach keeps Sylvia grounded in her frustration, misspent desire, and provides a sincerity that gives the audience something to invest in even as the absurdity around her continues to spiral.

Jesse Silva, playing Beau, brings a wonderfully awkward aura to the story. Rather than playing Beau as a smooth romantic lead, Silva leans into the discomfort that Beau has thrust upon him. Watching him try to navigate each increasingly impossible situationship after another becomes one of the production's greatest sources of comedy. His expressions alone will have you laughing.

Amanda Flanagan is delightful as Marjorie, bringing a sharp wit and unwavering confidence to the role. As an expectant mother, constantly eating, chain smoking, pouring another drink, or delivering a perfectly timed remark, Flanagan often steals the scene and commands attention every time she comes on stage. There is an unmistakable energy of someone convinced they are the smartest person in the room which makes every interaction all the more entertaining.

Torrione Hodges shines as Clark, proving that exasperation can be an art form. Through his reactions, his dialog, and his tone Hodges displays a remarkable understanding of how much frustration a scene requires, and delivers that with a generous helping of comedy which brings the audience along for the annoyance you just can't help but laugh at. His ability to play off the other actors on stage, and cue the audience on how we should be feeling, elevates every scene he is in.

Lily D'Anieri brings just the right mix of energy and naivety to Dierdre and handles the show's physical comedy with impressive precision. Physical comedy is often the hardest elements to pull off, especially on stage, and it's a key to good farce. D'Anieri's commitment and flawless timing makes it look effortless, consistently finding new ways to keep the audience laughing.

Marlon Kane rounds out the cast, appearing in the second act, and brings an almost unsettling calmness to the role of Richard. Kane creates a character that is equal parts charming, mysterious, and unintentionally hilarious. His measured delivery provides an excellent contrast to the increasingly frantic energy surrounding him.

Under Gallegos' direction, the ensemble cast functions like a finely tuned comedy troupe. Each performer brings a distinct energy to the role while playing off one another seamlessly. The chemistry among the actors make it seem like they have been performing together for years, allowing for each joke, reaction, twist, and surprise to land exactly when it should.

The technical elements also support the cast well. The staging is more extensive than many of the productions at Riverside Community Players, but rather than feeling overcrowded, it adds to the shows escalating chaos, and provides a delightful playground for the actors to move through. Each entrance, exit, and carefully timed interruption feels purposeful, allowing the comedy to build from scene to scene.

What makes The Cottage such an enjoyable evening is the cast's complete commitment to the material. No one is trying to force a laugh, rather each performer treats their character's problems, no matter how absurd, as completely serious. The audience just gets to sit back and enjoy the resulting chaos.

The Cottage runs through July 5 at Riverside Community Players, 4026 Fourteenth Street in Riverside. Tickets and additional information are available through the Riverside Community Players box office or Instagram. If you're looking for an evening filled with sharp performances, excellent ensemble work and plenty of laughs, this cottage is well worth a visit.
