Riverside City College Theatre Arts department presents How to Succeed at Business Without Really Trying, the musical comedy, opening up at the Landis Performing Arts Center on Nov 7, at 7pm. Based on the best selling novel, and shortened H2$, the Broadway musical brings the sharp witted story to life with tropes of the business world that still exist today.
The story of J. Pierrepont Finch, spelled F I N C H, and played by Ryder Thompson, and his meteoric climb through the ranks of World Wide Wicket Company through manipulation and a bit of deviousness provide the backbone for this hilarious satire of the business world. Thompson is so perfectly cast in this role, as. he brings a natural innocence in his presentation, which makes the crazy situations he navigates through the show all the more believable and hilarious.
This show really showcases the timing and precision these actors bring to their roles, not only in the mirrored interactions between Finch and other characters, or the big dance productions, choreographed by the amazingly talented Brenda Jill Castillo, but in the individual dance moments that really showcase the moments of realness during the show.
One of my favorite parts of the show was the character Bryce Johnson brings to life in Bud Frump. Johnson's facial expressions and body language are loud enough to be heard clearly by those in the back, and just adds so much to each scene he is in.
The persistent Rosemary, played by Gioia Cali, who sets her sights on Finch as a husband, brought an unexpected emotional depth to the non-stop laughter that this show is about, and Cali really shines as the love struck and often overlooked secretary chasing her dream man.
Hedy LaRue, the "sexy secretary" trope brought to life by Isabel Difani, does a wonderful job of playing the big boss J.B. Biggley, performed by Kevin Beaty, sometimes for the fool, and sometimes for the romance, but always for what she wants.
The whole cast flows well together through each scene, and it's clear that they are having a blast throughout the show. Directed by Jodi Julian, How to Succeed at Business Without Really Trying is definitely the laugh that we all need right now, and you can get your tickets at the RCC Box Office Online. Showtimes are November 7, 8 and 9, 2024 at 7pm and matinees on November 9 and 10, 2024 at 2pm.
