Starting on Thursday, February 27th, the Full Circle Players bring their latest production, Dot by Colman Domingo, to The Box in Downtown Riverside, Directed by J. Kay Weldon. This emotional and amusing production pulls on viewers' heart strings while keeping them enticed as they witness the cast struggle with family and change.

The story of Dot is all about family and follows siblings coming together for Christmas while confronting the reality of their mother’s Alzheimer’s condition as well as other conflicts that lay between each one of the characters. The production blends emotionally rich tones with more comedic tones that capture the complexities of family relationships while also keeping a focus on the more serious subjects too.

Unfortunately, just days before the opening night, the production faced an unexpected challenge. Nell Lawson, who was set to play Shelly, one of the main characters, was unable to perform. With no understudies to fill in the role, Director J. Kay Weldon filled in the role himself and performed as Shelly.

Despite not fitting the role exactly, Weldon delivered a very compelling performance that did not take away from the story in the slightest and showed his dedication to the production. The cast and crew seamlessly adjusted and put on a stellar performance with powerful storytelling.

Each cast member played their part perfectly, truly selling the individual conflicts between each character and making the family dynamic feel authentic. The standout performance of the night belonged to Marquita Hefflin-Tullis as Dotty. Her portrayal of a woman struggling with Alzheimer’s was moving and every time she lost track of her memory, especially when she repeatedly asked “what tree?”, struck an emotional chord.

With a balance of emotional depth and humor, Dot keeps you enticed and captures the conflicts of family, love, and change wonderfully. The cast members combined with the Full Circle Players’ love for theatre and Colman Domingo’s powerful script, make for an incredible experience.
Don’t miss out on your chance to experience Dot, as it runs at The Box in Downtown Riverside from February 27th to March 2nd and you can find the tickets on the Full Circle Players website
