Act Out Enrichment’s production of Newsies at the Box Theatre in Riverside delivers a fast-paced, high-energy performance that is sure to impress audiences. With strong performances across the board, including standout turns from Adam Travis, Leo McMains, and Kiera Elizabeth Cruz, this show brings the beloved Disney musical to life in a way that’s both entertaining and heartfelt.
Adam Travis leads the cast as Jack Kelly, the determined leader of the newsboys. Travis captures the character’s mix of charm, grit, and ambition, especially in his powerful rendition of "Santa Fe." His portrayal of Jack is both compelling and grounded, providing a strong emotional center for the production. Leo McMains shines as Les, the youngest newsboy. McMains brings humor and heart to the role, with excellent comedic timing and a natural ease on stage. His performance adds a lighthearted touch to the show, and his scenes with his older brother, Davey, are among the most endearing moments in the production.
Kiera Elizabeth Cruz stands out as Katherine Plummer, the determined reporter who joins forces with the newsboys. Cruz’s performance is smart and engaging, and she brings a lot of energy to her scenes with Jack. Her vocal performance in "Watch What Happens" is a highlight, and she brings a refreshing balance of strength and warmth to her role. The rollercoaster that Travis and Cruz take the audience on through distrust, friendship, betrayal, and ultimately romance and victory was really well done.
The production’s choreography is another major strength. The ensemble numbers, particularly "Seize the Day," are energetic and well-executed, with sharp movements and impressive coordination that keep the show moving at a brisk pace. Director and choreographer BEthany Schultz makes excellent use of the stage, filling every moment with action and excitement, and the kids do a remarkable job flowing through the moves, including some pretty impressive acrobatics throughout.
