Madilyn Mei is an indie-folk singer and songwriter from Arizona who uses her songwriting abilities to immerse her listeners in a comforting magical world with poetic stories and lyrics. Recently she has started her second ever tour called The Side Quest Tour that brought a fantasy themed experience around the country!
Fans alike attended the show dressed to fit the theme of a fantasy setting with guests dressed as elves, bards, and other wardrobe pieces that fit that theme. Medieval covers of popular songs were being played throughout the pre-show before any acts and had the crowd trying to figure out which song was currently playing and had everyone singing along to a medieval cover of A-ha’s classic “Take On Me”. As the show got closer to starting, fans walked up to the stage and began leaving notes and trinkets showing their love for the music and art of Madilyn Mei .
When Madilyn Mei made her introduction on stage, the crowd erupted with joy as she came up on stage and started her set. Funny gags and fan interactions were sprinkled throughout the show, with fans constantly showing their support by handing her handmade bracelets in which she put them all on. She played a large variety of her music, even doing a couple acoustic songs with her busting out a ukulele to play! The immersion of her set was next level as she utilized props around her to help tell the stories in her music and at one point all of the venue's stage lights went out, with her only using a flashlight to light up her face as she whispered a quiet part of her song.
Overall the show was really well put together with the props of the stage, order of songs in the set list, and of course the wonderful energy that the fans brought with them as they showcased their love and support as they sang along and dressed according to the theme!
Earlier in the night the artist Sparkbird opened the night with a wonderful performance with the use of insane keyboard talent and a wide range of vocals. They had me and other audience members intrigued as they talked about the meaning behind their stage name, being that a person’s “spark bird” is the bird that sparks their fondness of birds with theirs being the Western Tanager.
