La Santa Cecilia, a Los Angeles based band that is hard to fit into a single classification, but perform a variety of Cumbia, Boleros, Bossa Nova, and some others, brought their unique voice to the Fox Performing Arts Center on Nov 1 in Riverside, Ca.
La Santa Cecilia brings the heart of Mexican culture to their music, while amplifying the issues that are faced by many in their communities, including the resilience of the immigrant community despite widespread discrimination and family separation, highlighted in songs like Ice El Hielo, Nunca Más, and Un Mundo Raro.
The sold out crowd of fans at the Fox Performing Arts Center came to be immersed in their music and culture, and many wore Dia De Los Muertos costumes and makeup, dancing and and singing along to their favorite songs.
Named for the patron saint of music, Santa Cecilia, the band brings all that reverence and joy to their performance, and having won a Grammy in 2014 for their album, Treinta Dias, and nominations for Buenaventura and Y Vivir, it's clear that they are being watched over by their saint.
Aside from their own music, they are also known for the occasional cover songs like The Beatles Strawberry Fields Forever, Jose Jose's Cuidado, and Gloria Jones' Tainted Love. The set list for their Riverside show was the perfect opening for a weekend long celebration of Dia De Los Muertos throughout Riverside, including the two-day festival in Downtown Riverside.
Earlier in the night, the band Carlos y Charlos and the singer Vivir Quintana each performed on stage to get the crowd ready for the main show!
