Two tribute bands, paying homage to the 90's grunge alternative rock scene, took over the Riverside Municipal Auditorium, starting off with The Faithfull, a Pearl Jam tribute band, and followed by the headliner, Red Not Chili Peppers, a Red Hot Chili Peppers tribute band.
First up was The Faithfull who started out with "Release" from Pearl Jam's Ten album, a song about pain & loss and was the first song Eddie Vedder wrote with Pearl Jam, and the song he attributed to bringing them together as a band. This made a great starting song as the initial guitar rift drones into a building climax and brought the crowd with it.
The whole band served up a great Pearl Jam vibe through out the show, and even included some historical facts about Pearl Jam, such as where they came up with the name for the album "Ten." I won't spoil it, you'll just have to go see them play to hear the facts, and experience some great Pearl Jam songs played .. well .. played "Faithfull"y. The bands rendition of 'Jeremy' had all the passion and angst of the original and the crowd sang along throughout.
The headliner of the night was the Red Not Chili Peppers, and even they though they are "Not" doesn't mean they weren't hot! The drummer, bassist, and guitarist all came out to start off the first song of their set, 'Can't Stop,' and the lead singer exploded onto stage to start singing and set the tone for the rest of their high-energy set.
Throughout the set, they were moving around the spacious RMA stage and interacting with the eager crowd, with the bassist doing a great job of giving big "Flea" energy, which is a feat, since Flea is made of energy when he is on stage.
Their set included fan favorites like Californication, Aeroplane, Scar Tissue, and they finished the set strong with Under The Bridge and Give it Away, and the crowd ate up every moment, many wearing their Red Hot Chili Peppers t-shirts, dancing and singing along with the band.
The historic Riverside Municipal Auditorium, a 1400 person capacity entertainment venue in the heart of Downtown Riverside, is an amazing place to catch any live music. The acoustics are fantastic, and the tall wide open ceiling makes the venue feel spacious even when at capacity. There is also a nice garden area on the ground floor and a balcony right off the auditorium in case you need some air during the show.
Overall, the night was a blast, even for the littlest of the Red Hot Chili Peppers fans, and both bands did proper tribute to their original musicians. You can follow both bands on Instagram: @thefaithfullpjtribute and @rednotchilipeppers.
