Act Out Enrichment’s production of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown (Revised) opens this weekend at The Box Theatre in downtown Riverside, and after catching a preview performance from the Teen Cast B ensemble, it’s safe to say audiences are in for a heartfelt, funny, and surprisingly moving show. The production captures everything you’d hope for from a Peanuts-inspired musical: laughter, charm, and just enough existential dread to remind us that Charles Schulz’s world has always been more than just comic-strip whimsy.

Under the direction and choreography of Bethany Schultz, with music direction by Brittany Paige McMains, the young cast found a delicate balance between childhood playfulness and emotional honesty—the key ingredients that make Charlie Brown timeless. The minimalist set and familiar score let the performers’ personalities take center stage, creating a nostalgic atmosphere that felt equal parts Saturday morning cartoon and high school coming-of-age story.

Eleanor White gave a standout performance as Lucy, fully embracing the character’s sardonic self-absorption. Her comedic timing was sharp, her facial expressions perfectly exaggerated, and her confidence carried every scene she was in. She managed to channel Lucy’s bossy exterior while letting moments of vulnerability peek through, giving the role more nuance than one might expect from a youth production.

Kadence McMains shined as Sally, the wide-eyed wanderer of the group. She brought effortless humor and a delightful unpredictability to her scenes, whether chasing after philosophical questions or simply enjoying her own imagination. McMains’ performance captured the heart of Sally’s charm—part dreamer, part mischief-maker, and all sincerity.

As Charlie Brown, Emre Tuncel provided the emotional core of the show. His portrayal struck a balance between quiet humor and genuine melancholy, delivering songs like “The Doctor Is In” and “Happiness” with emotional weight that resonated beyond the character’s age. Tuncel made the audience root for Charlie Brown not out of pity, but out of recognition—we’ve all felt like the world’s most average kid at some point.

The rest of the Teen Cast B brought energy and cohesion to every group number. Schroeder, Linus, and Snoopy were played with enthusiasm and charm, their interactions giving rhythm to the production and keeping the pacing light. The ensemble shined brightest in songs like “My Blanket and Me” and “The Book Report,” filling the stage with color, movement, and humor that reminded everyone how strong community theater can be when everyone commits to the joy of performing.

Act Out’s use of alternating Kid and Teen casts adds an interesting dimension to the show’s run. Seeing how different age groups interpret these iconic characters offers a fresh take on familiar material, reminding audiences that Peanuts is as much about growing up as it is about staying young at heart.

Performances run October 17 through 26 at The Box Theatre in downtown Riverside. The Teen Cast performs October 17, 18, 25, and 26, while the Kid Cast performs October 18, 19, 24, and 25. Tickets are $22 online or $25 at the door, and can be found at ActOutEnrichment.com.

Whether you’re a lifelong Peanuts fan or just in need of a reminder that happiness really is a warm blanket, this is one you won’t want to miss.
