These performers bring a mix of charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent to the stage, delivering performances that range from classic drag numbers to innovative acts that challenge traditional norms. On Thursdays, The Menagerie presents Next, a platform that showcases emerging and established talents. Recently, the show was hosted by Bubblegum, who infused the evening with her distinctive style and energy, further enriching Riverside's drag offerings.

Among the rising stars in Riverside's drag community is Bruno Vamp, who has been instrumental in curating unique drag experiences. Notably, Bruno hosts the monthly event Club Vamp at Back to the Grind, a beloved coffeehouse and venue in downtown Riverside. This alternative live art experience combines drag shows, expressive dance, and unique performances, providing a safe and inclusive space for attendees. The lineup often features local drag icons and Club Vamp regulars, each bringing their unique flair to the stage and captivating audiences with performances that range from sultry and provocative to outrageous and comedic.

Another influential figure is Nebuer Styles, who hosts the Hot Mess Express every Thursday night at 9:30 p.m. at the VIP Nightclub & Restaurant. This open-stage drag show offers entertainers—from drag queens and kings to burlesque dancers and comedians—the opportunity to perform before an enthusiastic audience. Each month, performers are encouraged to incorporate themes into their acts, fostering creativity and community engagement. For instance, during a recent show themed "Night of 1000 Nebs!", entertainers recreated various performances from Nebuer Styles' fourteen-year drag career, showcasing the depth and diversity of Riverside's drag talent.

Even the local colleges and universities play a significant role in promoting drag culture. Riverside City College (RCC) hosts an annual drag show hosted by Anita Rose and organized by the Sexuality and Gender Acceptance (SAGA) Club. These events provide a platform for both seasoned performers and newcomers to showcase their talents, fostering a sense of community and acceptance on campus. Similarly, UC Riverside has been instrumental in supporting drag culture through events like the "Dragalicious Drag Ball," initiated in 2004, which showcases student talent and highlights the university's commitment to inclusivity.

The much-anticipated Fant-A-Shes show is set to return to the Riverside Municipal Auditorium on April 12. Known for its high-energy performances and comedic flair, this female impersonation revue has been a staple in Riverside's entertainment calendar. Past iterations have featured a lineup of numerous drag queens, including local talents and "RuPaul's Drag Race" alumni, such as Raven, Delta Work, and Morgan McMichaels, delivering a mix of skits, lip-syncs, and impersonations that have captivated audiences. Tickets are available through Live Nation.

Drag performances in Riverside—and across the nation—transcend mere entertainment; they serve as a powerful act of resistance in a time when LGBTQ+ and specifically transgender rights are under political attack. With increasing legislation aimed at restricting drag performances and trans visibility, drag has become an even more crucial form of self-expression and protest. These shows provide safe spaces where people can celebrate gender diversity and personal freedom, fostering an environment of resilience and community support. The artistry and activism embedded in drag performances remind us of the ongoing fight for LGBTQ+ rights and representation, making these shows more than just entertainment—they are acts of defiance, celebration, and unity.

Riverside is fortunate to have a dedicated LGBTQ+ organization called, Riverside LGBTQ+ Pride, who host events like "Culture Shock," a VIP Drag Brunch experience, and "Drag Me Down The Lanes," a cosmic bowling party, both of which blend drag culture with community engagement. They also have a several pride centric events throughout the year, such as the upcoming "Together we are Unlimited" which is free to attend. Get more information on their website. These events help to further cement drag as a cornerstone of Riverside's LGBTQ+ community, bringing people together in celebration of diversity and self-expression.

Riverside's drag scene is a testament to the city's dedication to fostering an environment where art, identity, and community coalesce, enriching the cultural tapestry for all its residents. As the country gets more and more divided, it's refreshing that Riverside has such a vibrant and rich drag community that is helping unite us all!
