The Riverside Scene usually keeps its focus closer to home, but some shows are simply too special to miss. Last night, trip-hop favorite Bitter:Sweet — now the solo project of singer and songwriter Shana Halligan — celebrated the release of the new album Baby is Back with an unforgettable performance at the Peppermint Club in West Hollywood.
For longtime fans like myself, who first fell in love with Bitter:Sweet when they opened for Serj Tankian at the Wiltern in 2008, the night felt like a joyful reunion and a true full-circle moment.

Bitter:Sweet originally debuted in 2006 as a duo, with Halligan collaborating alongside producer Kiran Shahani. Their first album, The Mating Game, helped define a moment in pop culture with its blend of sultry trip-hop, jazzy rhythms, and cinematic flair. Songs like “Dirty Laundry” and “The Mating Game” became ubiquitous in TV shows, movies, and commercials, thanks to their effortlessly cool sound.

Now carrying the Bitter:Sweet name on her own, Halligan has crafted Baby is Back as a celebration of new beginnings. The album sparkles with the lush, sensual textures fans expect but feels even more personal and free-spirited. It’s a confident return, full of playful grooves, swooning melodies, and the unmistakable shimmer of Halligan’s voice.

The Peppermint Club, known for its plush mid-century modern vibe, proved the perfect venue for the occasion. With its velvet booths, soft lighting, and intimate stage setup, the space fosters a rare closeness between performer and audience — and last night, that intimacy turned into pure magic.

Early in the set, nerves got the better of Halligan in the most charming way: just a few minutes into the opening number, she paused mid-song, laughing, and called out, “Let’s start that over!” The audience erupted in cheers and applause, embracing the honest, human moment. After that reset, Halligan seemed to breathe easier — moving across the stage with radiant joy, sharing moments, and feeding off the warm, enthusiastic crowd.

Throughout the night, it was clear how much fun she was having — dancing, laughing, and pouring her heart into every lyric. It wasn’t just a concert; it was a celebration of resilience, creativity, and the power of returning to what you love, stronger than ever.

By the end of the evening, one thing was clear: Baby isn’t just back. Bitter:Sweet is back — and Shana Halligan is leading the charge with style, heart, and a whole lot of soul.
