Riverside’s connection to citrus dates back to the 1870s, when the introduction of two navel orange trees from Brazil sparked what would become California’s citrus boom. Thanks to the region’s ideal climate and fertile soil, Riverside quickly became the epicenter of the state's citrus industry, earning it the nickname “The City of the Navel Orange.” By the early 20th century, citrus had transformed Riverside into one of the wealthiest cities per capita in the United States, and the fruit became a powerful symbol of California’s agricultural promise. The California Citrus State Historic Park now serves as a living tribute to this legacy, preserving the stories, groves, and heritage that helped shape both the region and the state's economy.
