The Psychedelic Furs and Jesus and Mary Chain came out to the Fox Performing Arts Center, with support from Frankie Rose, to create a night of high energy music that kept the crowd on their feet the whole night in Riverside on Nov 6.
Starting off the night was Frankie Rose, supporting the two headliners, played their set in "Near Dark" with a video going behind them of black and white imagery rolling behind them, playing fan favorites like Red Museum and getting the crowd pumped up for the night ahead.
Brothers Jim and William Reid from Jesus and Mary Chain took the stage after filling the auditorium with smoke to create a dream ethereal feeling as they started off their set with a track from their new album "Glasgow Eyes", Jamcod. Their set was a trip through their extensive collection of music dating back to the 80's, showcasing their unique type of new wave punk that helped define the sound throughout the 80's.
Known for their controversial sounds, and sometimes violent gigs, Jesus and Mary Chain have made a legacy for themselves that transcends a single genre of music, and their performance shows their talent hasn't faded even a little. During their performance of Sometimes Always, they brought out Frankie Rose to sing a duet with Jim, and then again for their hit song Just Like Honey. They finished up their set strong with Reverence and the crowd ate it all.
It was a night for brothers as Richard and Tim Butler from Psychedelic Furs came out as the final headliner and put on the show that fans have come to expect from this dynamic duo, starting off with The Boy Who Invented Rock and Roll from their latest album "Made of Rain", and continuing through their extensive collection of songs throughout their nearly 50 year long career.
The Furs created an amazing atmosphere throughout their show with their mix of light and smoke, and their well practiced way of interacting with the crowd and bringing everyone in the auditorium into the show. Their set included fan favorites like The Ghost In You, Pretty in Pink, and Love my Way.
The Furs are always an amazing experience to see live, and despite their decades of touring and making music, haven't lost any of the joy that is evident in their performance, and the crowd reflects that joy back to them, excitedly dancing and singing along to their favorite tracks and trying to capture a memory with their cell phones.
A venue like the Fox Performing Arts Center is also the perfect intimate experience for a band like this, providing an up close and personal experience, unlike when they play larger venues, and it was so great that the Psychedelic Furs and Jesus and Mary Chain included Riverside in their current tour which continues tonight in San Diego, and tomorrow Nov 9 at the YouTube Theatre in Inglewood.
